Health & Beauty Tips

Dear Kylie-Jane,

Hmmm.. as I pondered this week's e-newsletter, I thought of the most commom questions that Brides ask me when they are wanting to look their absolute best on their Wedding Day.

The most common question generally relates to having a fake tan that looks natural and is not bright orange or streaky! If you have ever applied a fake tan, you know that it can be a bit "hit and miss" with regards to the outcome!

Below are some fabulous tips to look like "hot stuff" as the weather warms up a bit.... and you want that gorgeous bronzed, natural look.....

This week we cover:-

"Top 10 Nail Care Tips" &

"Applying Your Fake Tan"

Enjoy :)

nails Q. My nails always seem to be breaking, brittle and weak... can you please suggest some options to improve them to be healthy and strong?

A.

Let's face it, healthy nails means a healthy you. Healthy nails with a typical pinkish tinge are a natural indicator of your overall health.

This is why nail care is absolutely essential. Here are ten nail care tips and nail care secrets that you can easily follow to maintain strong, good-looking, and healthy nails.

1. Eat and drink healthy:
Consume plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables. Increase your intake of zinc to strengthen your nails. Eating calcium rich food will promote nail growth. Other examples of nail-friendly food includes: apples, whole grains, nuts, garlic, brown rice, and eggs. Also make sure to drink plenty of water and fresh fruit juices.

2. Hydrate and moisturise:
Ensure that your nails stay hydrated. You can rub small amounts of petroleum jelly on your nails. Jelly can be substituted with castor oil or olive oil. Body lotion can also be rubbed on your nails.

3. Get massages:
Massaging your nails frequently will help in nail protection. Massaging them will increase the blood flow to the nails and accelerate nail growth. Before going to bed, massage your nails and cover your hands with gloves and your feet with socks.

 4. Nail polish is actually good:
Applying nail polish, along with a base coat and a protective top coat, will actually help protect your nails. If you're not too fond of
color, you can even apply a coat of clear polish.

 5. Watch out for the remover:
Always use an acetate-based nail polish remover. Never use a nail polish remover that contains acetone or formaldehyde, because they tend to dry the nails.

6. Air them:
Keep your nails well ventilated and free from moisture, as moisture will increase the chances of acquiring a fungal infection. Stay away from sweaty shoes and dirty socks. Always towel dry your nails after a shower or a dip in the pool.

7. Nail filing:
We all like perfectly filed, healthy nails. But take care to file them in a single direction only.
When a nail breaks, remember to smoothen and file the rough edges. And never file your nails when they are not dry, as wet nails are more prone to breakage.

8. Take care of the cuticles too:
While filing nails, don't forget to trim the overgrown
cuticles. You can also gently push them back. This is best done after soaking your hands and feet in warm water.

 9. Care while cleaning:
Wear rubber gloves while doing every day household chores like doing the dishes, cleaning and gardening.

10. Nails aren't tools:
Please don't use your nails as tools for picking, plucking, and prying stuff.

Applying Your Fake Tan

 tan

So, just how do you apply a perfect, natural-looking tan from a bottle ? Am I the only one who has ended up with bright orange palms, knees and ankles, as well as a rather, well streaky finish ? No, I think we've all been there at some point !

Below are a few tips and pointers on how to get the best fake tan without the neon-glowing palms effect.

1. Prepare the skin first. Use an exfolitator. Exfoliating first removes all the dead skin cells and gives the tan a good base to start with. The product's active ingredient is designed to cling to freshly buffed skin. Try not to use an exfolitator that is too rich or creamy as this can interfere with the absorbsion of the product. Buff extra well on areas such as elbows, wrists, ankles, hands, and feet. This would be a good time to shave also ! Rinse thoroughly and dry well.

2. Apply moisturiser to ankles, heels, tops of toes, kneecaps, and elbows. This keeps these spots from soaking up excess tanner and going orange.

3. Use a pair of snug disposable gloves to avoid getting your palms covered.

4. Pour the tanner in your hands, and rub them together so the product evenly coats each palm.

6. Work from your lower body up. First, cover the area between each ankle and knee. When you're done, apply what remains on your hands to the tops of your feet, ankles, and knees, which don't need as thick a coat. Do the same with your arms, using using leftover tanner on your elbows and the backs of your hands.

7. It may be wise also to have someone on hand to give a bit of help when trying to reach those hard to reach areas, like the top of the back and the shoulders. Many self-tanners now come with added colour so you can actively see where you are putting it.

8. For the face, use a formula specifically designed for it. It's normally a lighter formula both in colour so as to be more natural looking, and also in 'oiliness' to avoid problems with spots and clogged pores. Apply primarily to spots the sun naturally hits when out and about such as nose, cheeks, and midpoints of the chin and forehead. Then blend into the hairline using light, wispy movements.

9. Afterwards take note of the time the product specifies before coming into contact with water, clothes or moisturiser. You don't want to ruin all your hard work.

10. Moisturise often as this will prolong the effects and some ingredients in self-tanners do tend to dry out the skin a tad.

Common Mistakes

Applying a hurry. You're bound to miss a spots and the product will need time to dry.

Exercising within a few hours will make you sweat, and obviously, this can affect the development causing streaky patches.

Applying make-up to soon over it. Again this can affect the development and lead to streaking.

Try not to use too much. You can always add more later, and once it's on you're pretty much stuck with the effects for around a week or so. Go easy !
